Feb 28, Is It Spring Yet?

I am so tired of cold and snow and so are my animals. It has been an exceptionally long winter this year and we just haven't had those nice in between warm days that give you a break from the frigid weather. I need sunshine and I need a nice warm day to warm my bones and the dog's are ready too.

I encourage Rodeo and Maddie to spend as much time outdoors as possible during the winter because I want to make sure they are getting enough exercise and activity, but this year I've had trouble getting them to go out.

It's just so cold that they don't want to go. Most days, I basically have to force them out the door and they do their business and want right back in. I've tried just making them stay out anyway for a while but they just go and hideout in the dog house - No exercise there! LOL!

We have lots of toys here in the house and we play catch and wrestle and stuff but it's just not the same. We live on a farm/ranch, so they are used to getting lots of freedom and activity. I've noticed them being a little grouchy lately and I think they just have cabin fever. I know I do.

Finally today the temp got up close to 50 degrees and they were elated. They spent the whole day outdoors. When they finally came back in, they were exhausted. I think Maddie practically fell asleep in her food bowl!

It's hard this time of year to make sure our animals get enough exercise and activity but it's important to make an effort. A sedentary lifestyle is absolutely not healthy for them and it certainly doesn't make them happy either.

I'd love to hear your ideas and how you manage to keep your animals active during the winter. So please feel free to jump on and share your stories!

Have A Great Dog Day!

Feb 12, Yeah, It's Friday!

I'm so glad the week is over. Life has just been crazy lately. There's just too much going on with taxes and paperwork and ballgames and working on my website etc, etc, etc,..... you get the idea, as I'm sure you are all equally as busy.

Sometimes when it's late and Maggie comes over and snuggles up underneath my laptop, as if to say, put that thing away Mom! I wonder how did life get so complicated? My oldest daughter is off at her first year of school and I envy her so.

She's so carefree and enjoying every moment that life hands to her. I remember those days. I just keep wondering how it all went wrong! LOL!

So, in the mean time, I'm trying to take more time outs and play with the dogs and really enjoy them. Even just a few minutes of throwing the ball or wrestling on the floor improves everybody's mood! Not to mention the much needed exercise involved.

I also am making more time to spend with my family just talking. You remember, just a good old fashioned hey, how was your day? What happened today? It's so easy to become disconnected.

So give yourself, your family and your pets a stress break and slow down a little. It really does help. When you come back to your work, you are more relaxed and you feel like you've accomplished something important.

Besides, spending time with those that you love, is never wasted time. :)

Have A Happy Dog Day!

Jan 16, Muddy Puppy Feet Everywhere! Oh and $7 E-book too!!!

Have I mentioned that I hate winter! I hate the cold, the ice and the mud that ends up on everybody's feet when it all melts! I especially despise the mud on my puppy dog's feet.

It's just that time of the year and the kids (Rodeo and Maddie) just can't help themselves from staying out of the mud and as all of you know, if you don't do something drastic your house will soon look like a mud wrestling pit!

However, over the years, I've learned a few tricks that help keep the floors clean and keeps me from threatening the family and the dogs with bodily harm! LOL!

For starters I make sure I keep a good stiff rug outside the doors and I keep it shook out and clean as often as possible. I also try to sweep off the sidewalks leading up to the doors occasionally.

Next I keep boot scrapers outside the doors and continue with rugs inside the doors that are movable and washable. For the dogs, I've also added a flat dog bed beside the patio door that I demand they make a sharp left turn as soon as they enter the door to and lay down on. This gives them time to dry off and clean their feet.

It's also easy to clean. I just take the vacuum to it every week. It also gives the dogs a very clear message of what I want them to do when they come in the door and their feet are dirty.

On a really bad day, I'll grab a damp cloth and help them wipe their feet but if it's too serious, I just run a couple of inches of water in the tub and give them a quick rinse. It saves everybody the hassle of cleaning up!

So if you're having trouble with muddy paw prints, try a new routine with a specific place for them to go to when they enter the house. It will save you and them a ton of cleaning!

Jan 8, New Series of Dog Food Brand Pages

Hello and Happy Friday Everybody! I just love Friday's and the start of a new weekend. So many possibilities!

So I have been working on a new set of pages for my website. I'm often frustrated with the information or lack of information on dog food out there. It's so hard to distinguish what you should be looking for or not looking for and what agencies are policing who?

So I'm taking a shot at it myself. I'm addressing:

Choosing The Best Dog Food Brand

Dog Food Regulations & Dog Food Labeling

Dog Food Nutritional Requirements

Dog Food Energy Requirements

and well what ever else I think needs addressing while I'm writing it. lol I often tend to think of new things that I should talk about when I'm writing and I end up writing an entirely different page than I started out to.

My hope is that I can explain some of the mess that is dog food and make it a little easier for you to make your choice for your precious little buddy or in my case two spoiled rotten, very picky, I'm so not eating that Mom, I love them very much precious little buddies!

Oh, and before I go, my kids are pretty much grown - the youngest is 16 - so days of them crawling into bed with me in the middle of the night are few and far between. However, Maddie has begun a new version of this. She waits until her dad is asleep because he doesn't allow puppies to sleep in the bed and then crawls up quietly on my side of the bed and makes her way up to gently lay her head on my pillow right beside me. It's adorable! The drawback - Now I'm sleeping between two snorers!

Have a Happy Dog Weekend!

Jan 4, My Grandpa Johnny

My Grandfather passed away this week and I want to take a few lines to share with you the man who's legacy of hard work, ethics and strong commitment to family helped me to become the person I am today.

He met my Grandmother at a dance one evening and that first dance never really ended. It truly was love at first site and they spent the rest of their lives dancing that dance with each other.

Sharing their lives together on a small farm, raising their four children and loving each other. It was truly a love to write about and such a gift to those of us lucky enough to grow up around.

As children, they were just our Grandma and Grandpa. We all grew up on the farm and helped with chores and hung out learning the ways of farm life. For most of us it was the beginning of our love for the simple life and animals.

Although those days have long gone, they are never far from my mind and continue to be some of the happiest times of my life.

Now that we are grown, we realize the gifts our grandparents have bestowed upon us and that they are much more than just Grandma and Grandpa.

Grandpa may be gone now, but the things he has taught us all through his love, laughter, humor and grace in the way he lived his life will last us a life time.

I love you Grandpa Johnny. Thank you for everything you have given me and our family. Until we meet again...

Dec 28, Finally A Little Sunshine

It was so nice to see the sun shining again today. Maddie and Rodeo were starting to get a little crazy spending too much time indoors. They have been having regular wrestling matches in the living room and it sounds like the WWF for dogs in my living room! LOL!

It is so nice though to see Rodeo enjoying himself with his new playmate. I always spent so much time trying to play with him but I just could keep up. Border Collies are such active dogs. Maddie and him are just having a ball every day running and chasing each other outdoors. Plus we get to play with the balls inside (during winter). It's such healthy competition.

Maddie has been a true blessing for all of us and I would encourage anyone that is thinking of adding a dog to their family to at least consider adoption from a shelter or a rescue dog.

Take your time and choose wisely to make sure that you are a good fit for the dog and the dog is a good fit for you and your family. They can add so much to your home and what you add to their lives is immeasurable.

Have A Happy Dog Day!
