The main things that are important to consider when addressing your dog's hygienic needs are not just aesthetic in nature. Dog accessories and dog grooming are also important to keep your dog healthy and pest free.
One of the first steps in dog grooming is maintaining your dog's coat. This can require an occasional bath. Most dogs do not require regular baths. If you do bath your dog, it should be no more than 1X/week but ideally I think 1X/6months is sufficient. Be sure when you are bathing them that you only use dog accessories shampoo that is designed just for dogs.
Something you need to do regularly whether you choose a professional dog groomer or home grooming is to brush your dogs coat frequently. How often you do this will depend on the breed of dog you have. For example, if your dog has a short coat, they will need a weekly brushing, and maybe a bath once or twice a year at most. Long haired dogs can require daily brushing to keep their coat from tangling. It will probably be necessary to bath them every month or two.
Trimming your dogs nails can be a scary job. There are so many different kinds of dog accessories and tools available. If you've ever trimmed your dog's nails or seen it done, you know that you can really hurt a dog if it's not done correctly. One of my favorite dog accessories is the new tool they have come up with to trim nails. It is a new filing type of tool that works like a dremel tool. One of the more popular products is the Pedipaws Pet Nail Trimmer. I use this one on my dogs and it's a nice easy file and there is no squeezing the quik or cutting too deep because you just file a little at time. It's definitely a tool to add to your grooming kit.
Next you need to clean your dog's ears. It's common for dog's to get ear mites, which are these pesky little bugs that live in the wax of their ear. Eventually the mites get big enough they look like little black spots and by then your dog will be shaking their head and scratching at their ears like their crazy.
Something most people don't think about is the care of their dog's teeth. Many people never brush their dog's teeth or utilize other methods to assist in the process. They actually make toothpaste that is specifically designed just for your dog and is flavored to taste good to your dog. You should never use your toothpaste to brush your dog's teeth because it can make them sick.
When you are handling your dog, you need to look for a few other things that can affect their health and should fit into their grooming schedule. Your dog will need to be wormed on a regular basis. You need to see the vet to seek the correct course of worming treatment. You can worm your dog at home but it's difficult to tell what type of worms your dog needs to be treated for so it's really better to get the correct dog accessories from your vet.
Another condition to look for is what they call hot spots. A hot spot can seem to appear out of nowhere. It happens when a small puncture wound or maybe some type of bug bite or perhaps a sticker puncture causes an irritation and then inflammation underneath the fur coat against the skin. Your dog then begins to rub, lick and chew at the area and can actually become severe within an hour or two. This becomes extremely painful for your dog. The best prevention is to practice good hygiene. The best treatment is to keep the area dry and clip the hair around the area. I personally use a product called Prozyme to effectively treat hot spots that you can access through the hot spots link above.
Last but certainly not least in the grooming world is the all important “bling” accessories. You know, ribbons and bows, charms, painted nails, collars with rhinestones.
Without adding something special, many people just feel like the job isn't complete and there's nothing you unique about your dog's look. These are the ultimate dog accessories and let's face it, we all love to spoil our dogs. For pets sakes, if you can't spoil your dog – what has the world come to? Lol!
