Using Dog Food To Get
Training Results

Have you ever noticed how focused your dog becomes on his dog food during feeding time? Granted there are differences between dogs. Some dogs are mild mannered and just intently stare until you set it down and then attack it with silent diligence.

Others however, practically knock you down with enthusiasm, as if they haven't eaten in a month. So how can you use this to your advantage when trying to train your dog?

It's really a simple concept if you think about it. When your dog is hungry, it is instinct for them to want to eat and they will do anything to get to that food.

Since they will respect and consider the person who gives them their food the “pack leader” or you the person feeding them, they look to you as their only source of food. What this means is, you possess the power during feeding time and you need to utilize that power as a training tool.

So from now on, think of feeding time as an opportunity to train your dog. Take full advantage of that power and your dog will eventually know that he has to be respectful and act accordingly to your commands to get to his dog food. On top of being a great training tool, this also helps eliminate bad behavior such as jumping and barking that can often go along with feeding time.

How To Start Your Training

To start your Best Quality Dog Foods training you will first need to work on the actual skill of feeding them before you can move on to other training. You should have a regular time each day that you feed your dog. Dogs can get confused and upset easily if they are used to a regular feeding schedule and then no one shows up to feed them.

You can also choose to do a free feeding program but you will want to monitor it and make some choices about what foods you choose to feed them and this will take away your chance to use food as a training tool.

If they are running around you and jumping up and down like a crazy dog – you know what I mean lol – then do NOT set the bowl down. Make them wait. Remember you are in charge and they will obey you. It's essential that you show them that you are the Pack Leader! So don't give in.

It's also not good for anybody else to try and give commands while you are training either. Only one person should be training. The rest of the family can join in later when the skill is perfected.

Don't be afraid to firmly use your hands to push your dogs bottom down to show them what you are wanting them to do. Just don't ever push hard or hurt them in any way. This will only serve to ruin your training efforts and your relationship with your dog.

The purpose of making them wait for their food until they respond to your command, is that this will eventually show them that this behavior makes them wait longer to receive their food and they will stop and follow your sit command immediately in the future.

Once you've accomplished this, stick with it a few days before you move on to something new and be sure to praise your dog each time they follow your commands.

Commands

When giving commands, be sure to be clear and concise with them. Use one word commands like sit, stay, walk, food, etc. By using these types of commands, your dog will clearly understand what it is your are asking of them and he will soon be obeying all of your dog training commands. Why, well because they know that the sooner that they respond to what you have asked them to do, the sooner they get what they want. It's that simple.

The biggest benefit is that you will end up with a well mannered pup that will be an outstanding family addition to your home for years to come. Just remember that your dog can never have too much love or too much praise!
