What Makes A Healthy Dog Treats
How Do You Choose One

In 2007 Dog Food and Healthy Dog Treats became the focus of every pet lover following the news of the pet food recalls that involved major pet food brands. It was nothing less than an absolutely horrifying nightmare for every single dog or cat owner who had unknowingly and potentially poisoned their own dogs.

Within 10 days of the initial reports of the pets deaths, almost 500 additional cases of pet kidney failure were reported in the recall and over 100 of those had already died. This ignited a firestorm of people who loved to spoil their pets with dog treats and dog foods. Before there had been concerns about the ingredients in commercial dog food such as too many preservatives and chemicals but now how could they possibly ever trust what ingredients the companies were claiming?

The Search For A Better Dog Treat

This led pet consumers on a quest for a better source and a better option. Anyone who knows a true pet lover knows that they will indulge their dog and treat them as part of the family with no limits. With this idea in mind, many pet lovers started looking into healthy natural dog treats that they could make at home.

Some even started up their own dog bakery businesses and started selling natural dog treats along with other dog treat varieties such as organic, gourmet, biscuits, dog cake and homemade dog treats to satisfy the need of spoiled dog lovers everywhere.

Unfortunately many of these so called natural dog treats aren't so natural. They include ingredients like poor quality flours, preservatives, yogurt that isn't really yogurt etc. However, there are many outstanding bakeries out there that are going that extra mile to do the job right. Although the label regulations aren't yet what they should be, they are making an effort.

What To Include & What To Leave Out

Before you can begin to narrow down your choices for your healthy dog treats , you need to know what to look for and what not to look for. What is a healthy dog treat? There are actually many answers to that question and you need to take several things into consideration when making your selection.

For starters, a healthy dog treat does not need to taste bad or even worse, be tasteless! There is a wide variety of flavors and ingredients available in healthy dog treats and remember you can always make your own recipe if your dog is super picky.

It's also important to remember that your dog will eat healthy items like fruits and vegetables if given the chance to introduce them into their diet properly.

So what are healthy dog treats?

  • Natural - A healthy natural dog treat should not include any chemicals, preservatives, dyes or added artificial flavorings. The whole idea is that this type of treat is natural and should not include processed ingredients.
  • Nutritious – Each treat should supply a healthy amount of vitamins and minerals.
  • Made-to-order – Your dog certainly will have different likes and dislikes than my dog and may also have different foods that disagree with them. The point is, you will want to be able to choose specific ingredients to include and exclude for your dog's treats.
  • Fresh – Any ingredient used to make a dog treat should be fresh including all fruits and vegetables. Healthy dog treats should be no different than food you would prepare for yourself in that they are made with human grade ingredients.

What Qualities Are You & Your Dog Looking For

Once you know what to look for in the ingredients of a healthy dog treats , you need to determine what you want in a dog treat for your dog and what your dog's preferences are. As I mentioned above there are multiple choices now available.

If you have no idea what your dog likes or where to start, I would suggest going online and asking for free samples from a few bakeries of dog treats that you are interested in. Most bakeries are happy to send you a couple of free samples.

variety of dog treats This will give you and your dog the opportunity to examine the quality and ingredients of each dog treat, as well as, which dog treats your dog prefers. I would suggest that you choose a few different treats and not just one.

Remember, you don't want to have the same snack every single day for the rest of your life and with that in mind, your dog doesn't want to have the same dog treat every day for the rest of their life.

Shapes Sizes and Flavors

You can start with a dog biscuit for example. These are usually sold in a bone-shape made by a cookie cutter. Next add an Organic Dog Treat to your list. Make sure that you choose a 100% organic treat as those are made with products that have no chemicals.

You can then add an All Natural or Holistic Dog Treat to your list. Again, this just means that the ingredients in this dog treat have been through minimal processing.

Once you have several choices all that's left to do is place your orders and wait. When your dog treats start arriving, be sure not to feed them all at once.

You want to space them out so that you will know if your dog has a problem with any of them and their ingredients. Narrow down your choices by your assessment and your dog's reaction to each treat. I suppose for some, this may seem like a tedious process but taking the time to carefully choose a dog treat for your precious pup is a true gift for your faithful companion. Choosing a healthy dog treat is highly important to the overall health and lifespan of your dog.
